Conversation, ideas and events for parents in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County

Before your baby is born, they are already becoming aware of the world around them.  They may not be able to see you yet, but they can still hear your voice.  And they can also feel you every time they kick.  While they are still forming, this is a wonderful opportunity to get to know them through play and attention.

Through sound

By the time they are 20 weeks in utero, your baby can hear what's going on around them.  They can even recognize your voice.  So talking to them can both soothe them and excite them.  Not sure what to say?  Start by reading books to them, like the baby books you plan on reading to them when they are babes in arms.  They can also hear music and other sounds.  Pay attention to their response to certain songs or noises.  Are there some sounds that make them kick a little more?  Are there some that startle them?

Through touch

By 24 weeks, many moms have started feeling the first flutterings of their baby's movements.  Soon it is strong enough for others to see too.  Does your baby kick at your hand when you have placed it against your belly?  When the baby kicks, poke back and see if they respond.  Many times they will kick back.  Let your husband in on the fun, and the baby's older siblings.

What are some ways you have interacted with your baby before they were born?
