Conversation, ideas and events for parents in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County

The month of March is not just the third month of the year. It’s the month when spring comes, when everything wakes up from its wintery slumber and the world feels brand new once again. The sun starts shining on grass that magically turns green, the air is fresh and clean, everything is reborn.

March is also a great time for changes in your life, or perhaps to give something up for awhile. One mom I know decided that this would be the perfect month to attempt the 30 Day Shred. Another is giving up all meat products and by products and becoming vegan for the month. Another mom is giving up all things Monsanto (read more about what this is, and why she will be giving it up by clicking HERE).  Me? Well I can’t say…specifically. But it was the hardest thing I could think of to give up for 31 days. And I am still waiting on Mr. W’s approval, since it affects him too...* Otherwise, I’ll have to come up with a Plan B for something to change or rid myself of for the month of March.

So how about you? Will you join me and other moms in this challenge?   In this month of spring, what will you be changing or ridding yourself of?  Maybe this is the month that you give up that glass of wine in the evenings.  Or maybe coffee is the vice that you omit for 31 days.  Maybe you'll decide to spend 31 days doing something outdoors, or reorganzing things indoors.  Maybe it's a good month to practice not raising your voice - at all, or letting bad words slip in.  Maybe you'll choose to give up shopping, or maybe TV.  There are so many vices that we can give up for one month.  Remember, it’s only 31 days. And as soon as April comes, you can take it back up again. Leave a comment telling us about your Springing Forward step. And don’t forget to share how things are going during the month!

*Oh, did you think I meant...ahem...the deed? Nope! Mr. W and I are giving up Facebook! This is a biggie...
Mine should be sugar, it really should. But that's so hard!! I'm addicted. What would be included? Does sugar in the natural fruit yogurt count (Nancy's brand)?
I've given up sugar before. It's definitely a hard one! Basically, you set your own rules in this challenge. For me, I decided that even those things that were "naturally" sweetened should be considered sugar. In fact, I gave up all things sweet just to rid me of the temptations - including fruit and artificial sweetners. The result allowed me to lose my immense sweet tooth. To this day I don't drink coffee with sugar in it, something I used to heap into my coffee!

Hmmm... good point about fruit. That is awesome (and great incentive) that you were able to conquer your sweet tooth!
It's day 2 of the challenge. I admit it. I am going through Facebook withdrawals. There's something addicting about posting exactly what I'm doing at random times of the day, or wasting time by looking up what other friends are up to. Also, I've been realizing just how much I was depending on Facebook to keep up friendships. At the moment, no Facebook means that a little bit of loneliness has sunk in. I'll have to remedy that by seeing friends face to face. What a concept, I know.

I've realized that by giving something up, I am leaving a hole where that something used to be. Without filling that hole, I am leaving myself open to temptation of just going really quickly online and seeing what's up with all my Facebook homies. I was talking about this with Mr. W last night, and was musing that I need to fill it up with something like more reading, or maybe get more writing in. And he mentioned that this might be the perfect time for me to tackle all those projects I've put on the back burner. Hmmm..... That really doesn't sound as much fun as reading, or writing, or maybe even catching up on some sleep.... We'll see.

As a second change, I made the plunge and purchased the 30 Day Shred. Anyone try this? It's brutal! You don't think that it will be, especially since it is only a 20 minute workout. But by the time that your muscles are screaming and you are ready to just go switch the DVD off and get a cookie, Jillian calls you on it and tells you to get back to your workout. Jillian has been cursed at many times in my house. I've only done 2 workouts, and my muscles are feeling it. But it's a good sore. I'm ready to be rock hard by the time April comes.

Anyone else joining me in this "Spring Forward" mission? What are you changing or giving up for the month of March? Tell us all about it, and don't forget to let us know how it's going!
In two more days I will be free from this challenge. Is it sad that I miss Facebook a whole bunch? I'll admit, I peeked a couple times during the month. But not once did I update my status update. And I stayed away from the Newsfeed. So I felt really disconnected the whole month from my virtual friends. But the good news is that I made it a point to go out to lunch or visit with friends every week. And that was something that I hadn't even realized I had been neglecting. It's so easy to claim busy-ness when it comes to socializing. But the truth is, each of us have a window of opportunity to visit face-to-face with a friend, even if it's just folding laundry together. I encourage each of you to make it a point this spring to visit with a friend you may not have visited with in awhile, to set up some real face-to-face time with each other.

My other half of the challenge, my back-up plan if you will, was attempting Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred. If you have ever thought about trying this, let me tell you that you will LOVE IT! I noticed results right away. And my energy levels increased a lot. I was sore for the first few days, and began a routine that included 3 days on, 1 day off. After that first day off, the exercises were a lot easier. And I was able to go up in levels each week. Unfortunately, I had to take a week and a half off of it recently because of some neck pain I was having before I even started. But now that I am back on the mend I will be taking it up again.

How did the rest of you do? Anyone join the challenge with me?

Also, don't miss next month's challenge. It's way easier, and a lot of fun!
