Conversation, ideas and events for parents in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County

A Carolina Beach restaurant is saying no to kids, at least the screaming and crying kind. Brenda Armes, the owner of the Olde Salty restaurant, says she is tired of customers complaining about tantruming kids ruining other diner’s experiences. So she placed a sign in her window that reads: "Screaming Children WIll NOT Be Tolerated!"

Some diners tend to agree. "It's not very enjoyable when you hear a bunch of kids screaming. It's nice to see a sign like that up," restaurant patron Gary Gibson said. But not everyone shared his sentiment. "I've never seen a restaurant say, don't bring your screaming kids in here," mom Ashley Heflin said. "You can't help it if your kids scream."

What’s your take? Should restaurants be allowed to ban crying kids from their establishment for the sake of their other patrons? Or is this just another way to discriminate against families?

I think the policy is fine. There may be restaurants that tolerate screaming kids, and others that don't, but not every restaurant should be required to do so.

We're not talking squirmy, or whiny, or chatty, or fussy, but basically a no-tantrum rule (I think I would also apply the rule that other tables should not be asked to parent your child if he or she is given to wandering about, unless everyone who likes the place seems to think that's fine).

If your child has a tantrum, take him or her outside for a little bit, and if you can calm him or her down, great, but if not, get takeout. The kid's not ready for a restaurant. Some kids aren't ready longer than others, which is a pain for their parents, but really, a "no screaming" rule is not unreasonable.

If you have a lively kid, find a back table and be prepared to make a quit exit. It's just part of life socializing young children.
Maybe their service is so slow that the kids have meltdowns??

Personally if my kids are screaming, I scoop them up and remove them from the location. Luckily they are a bit older now. Dining out is tough for families with young children. A little bit of help, tolerance and patience for all goes a long way.
