Conversation, ideas and events for parents in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County

Among the droves of kids who go door-to-door asking for candy, Halloween night also has it's fair share of teens that continue with the trick-or-treat tradition.

Do you give them candy? What if they don't dress up, would that make you less willing to treat them?

I have a very fond memory of the Bennett Valley neighborhood reminding me and some friends in a not-so-subtle manner that we were just a wee bit old for the tradition. "Wait until the girls find out about this, you guys aren't gonna get dates until you're 20!" was my favorite quote of the night.

So in a desire for them to experience the holiday exactly as I did when I was their age (it's only fair, right?), of course I give them candy...and then I ridicule them!
That's classy. Thanks for the laugh!

I think I'd probably give them candy too, but couldn't help asking them if they thought they were a little old to be begging for candy. However, if they're going door-to-door for candy instead of egging my car or leaving flaming sacks of mysterious packages on my doorstep, I am more than happy to give them a fun size candy bar.
Yeah, good point. You also have to consider that they might egg your car, leave flaming sacks of "stuff," etc., if you don't give them candy, so it's probably in your best interest to appease them.

That doesn't mean you can't have fun with a little good-natured teasing, though. It's not like they won't already know what you'll tell them.

It's all part of the tradition.
Our Halloween policy is that we give candy out to anyone that is "participating", including uncostumed teens as long as they say "trick or treat". It's a night for fun and community. Of course, I recall dressing up with a friend at the age of 17 (!) and trick or treating for several hours. We used the line that "our boyfriends dared us to get 50 pieces of candy each" blah, blah blah. It worked fabulously and many housewives virtually filled our bags so that we could "end our obvious humiliation"! LOL
