Conversation, ideas and events for parents in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County

One of the moms on our Facebook page is looking for some tips:

Elsa Thomas:  I'm looking for things to do with my son during school vacation. Any fun ideas?

With winter break coming up, I know a lot of people are curious about what to do with the kids during this time.  Here are a few suggestions:

The Pottery Studio:  This is one of my favorite suggestions.  Even when it's cold and yucky outside, the atmosphere in here is bright, warm, and cheerful.  For a reasonable price, your child can paint their own plate, ceramic sculpture, cup, etc any way they want, feeling like an artist for the day.  Right now they're even doing ceramic footprints, but you have to call and make an appointment if you'd like to do this.  Check their website for special discount days and events.  632 Fourth Street, Santa Rosa.

Cal Skate: Afternoon skate sessions (2-4pm) are only $6 (not including skate rentals), and $5 on Thursdays (when quad rentals are free! Bring the kids in to burn off some energy, and don't be afraid to strap on some skates yourself to show off your skills. The rink has a snack bar, game section, and tables to relax at while the kids skate the afternoon away. 6100 Commerce Blvd. Rohnert Park.

My Gym Santa Rosa: From Dec 27-Dec 4, My Gym is holding a fun camp of activities for kids. And if you register by Dec 15th, you can take advantage of their "Buy 3 days, get 1 free" deal. Plus you can pick and choose the days that will work for you. The camp will feature active fun like gymnastics, arts & crafts, music, and more. Healthy snacks are included, and there's an 8 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Find out more information on their website. 3267 Airway Dr, Santa Rosa.

$3 movies: All the movies at the Third Street Cinemas are $3 - every day, every showing. Right now you can see Frankenweenie or Hotel Transylvania, plus a few adult movies. No doubt there will be a few different movies showing by the time winter break rolls around. Take a 2-hour break and catch a flick at the movie theater. 620 3rd St, Santa Rosa

Charles Schulz Museum: The museum hosts a bunch of fun classes from Dec. 15 - Jan. 5th. Make a gingerbread doghouse, create crafty gifts, learn how to cook, be taught how to create cartoons, and so much more. Check out their website for a list of classes, and sign up before they all fill up (many of them do rather quickly). 2301 Hardies Ln, Santa Rosa.

The library has reading lists & sometimes craft classes or reading to kids dates. The Children's Museum (which happens to be just next to Snoopy's). SR Parks & Rec. has some great classes. There are plays going on thru Wells Fargo Center & 6th Street Theater.

I may have missed a few too. I also do my best to bookmarks sites, check on Pinterest for ideas, and get books from the library (as well as magazines) that have how-to's for games, coloring activities, crafts, etc.

I hope that helps. Have fun!
